Ukraine Shot Down Russia’s Su-24 ‘Fencer’ Fighter Bomber

Ukraine destroyed a Russian Su-24 aircraft, also known as a “Fencer” jet, its armed forces said Friday, as war between the nations continues.

“During the current day, the Defense Forces aviation has hit 4 areas of the focus of the enemy’s life force and military equipment and 1 support point. The losses of the enemy are being specified,” the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said in an unverified situational update on Facebook. “In addition, our air defense units in different directions destroyed a Su-24 aircraft, two winged missiles and one Gulf of the invaders.”

An Su-24 aircraft is manufactured by the Moscow-based Sukhoi Design Bureau Joint Stock Company and the Novosibirsk Aircraft Production Association, according to Airforce-Technology.com.

“The Su-24M entered service in 1983 and is a development of the Su-24, known by the NATO codename ‘Fencer,'” Airforce-Technology.com said.

The update comes as Ukraine’s armed forces continue a counteroffensive, hoping to retake control of some regions, such as Kherson and Izium.

“The threat of aviation and missile strikes throughout Ukraine remains,” the Ukrainian armed forces said in the update. “The enemy continues to terrorize civilians, striking residential neighborhoods and civilian infrastructure, in violation of International Humanitarian Law, laws and customs of warfare.”

The update also said that while Russian armed forces have fired several rockets and air strikes on different regions in Ukraine, “the enemy suffers significant losses of personnel and military equipment on a daily basis, which greatly affects the psychological condition of the occupiers,” due to successful actions by Ukrainian “Defense Forces units.”

“Rocket troops and artillery continue to destroy the enemy,” the update added. “As a result of a fire impact on the unloading station, the replenishment of Russian occupation troops with reserves was disrupted. In addition, 2 areas of concentration of live force and combat equipment of the Russian occupants fell into the affected area.”

Ukrainian officials also recently accused Russian military forces of sending missiles toward power plants.

“I believe that Russia’s demonstrative strikes on thermal power plants and hydrotechnical facilities will speed up the process of transferring these systems to us,” Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, told news agency Interfax on Friday.

Amid Ukraine’s counteroffensive, Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brigadier General Pat Ryde said on Friday, “What we assess is that the Ukrainians are consolidating their gains after taking back significant territory, and that the Russians are attempting to shore up their defensive lines after having been pushed back.”
