Raytheon, a division of RTX, has been awarded a $946 million contract to supply Romania with additional Patriot air and missile defense systems.
This latest agreement includes a comprehensive package of fire units, radars, control stations, and missiles, further enhancing Romania’s defensive capabilities amid escalating regional security concerns.
“Raytheon is committed to providing Romania with advanced integrated air and missile defense capabilities to protect its citizens and critical infrastructure,” said Pete Bata, senior vice president of Global Patriot at Raytheon. “Romania’s continued investment in Patriot is a testament to the nation’s dedication to ensuring collective security, deterrence, and stability across Europe.”
The deal underscores Romania’s ongoing efforts to reinforce its role in NATO’s collective defense strategy. Patriot, widely regarded as the world’s only combat-proven ground-based air and missile defense system, has been instrumental in countering advanced aerial threats, including long-range cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles, and complex raid attacks.
Currently deployed in 19 countries, Patriot serves as a cornerstone of air defense, consistently demonstrating its effectiveness against modern threats. Romania’s decision to expand its Patriot inventory reflects its commitment to maintaining robust deterrence and ensuring stability across the region.
Romania has also played a pivotal role in supporting Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression. In June, Romania announced its decision to donate one of its Patriot systems to Ukraine. The delivery, confirmed by Romanian Defense Ministry spokesperson Constantin Spinu, was completed in October, marking a significant milestone in regional defense collaboration.
“I thank every country that helps us with air defense. I am especially grateful to Romania for Patriot systems. Together, we can achieve even greater effectiveness — we can put an end to Russian terror by jointly destroying Shahed drones and missiles,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his address following the system’s deployment.
