Ukrainian troops are advancing in all directions of their counteroffensive, a senior official has said.
Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar told Ukrainian television: “If we talk about the entire frontline, both east and south, we have seized the strategic initiative and are advancing in all directions.”
Ukraine has reclaimed clusters of villages in the southeast since the beginning of the counteroffensive, but Russia retains control of swathes of territory in the country’s east, south, and southeast and Kyiv’s progress has been slower than some Western officials and military analysts anticipated.
Ms Maliar added that troops were moving “confidently” on the flanks around Bakhmut, which is held by Russian forces, and that the main fighting was going on around the city. She also said that Ukrainian forces were moving with “mixed success” in the south of the country.
“In the south, we are moving with varying success, sometimes there are days when it is more than a kilometre, sometimes less than a kilometre, sometimes up to 2 kilometres.”
Reuters was unable to verify the battlefield situation. Russia has not acknowledged Ukrainian gains on the battlefield.
