Spain Delivers Apside and Hawk Surface-to-air Missiles To Ukraine

The Spanish government is preparing a new military aid package to Ukraine. Now there is information about what will be handed over to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba, Spain will transfer to the Armed Forces of Ukraine a battery of anti-aircraft missile system Aspide. In addition, we will receive four Hawk air defense systems, anti-tank missile systems, as well as grenade launchers and projectiles for them. Weapon deliveries will begin shortly.

The Spada Aspide (also known as Skyguard Aspide) is an anti-aircraft missile system that was jointly developed by Italy and Switzerland. It uses medium-range guided missiles to defeat air targets. The missiles are manufactured by the Selenia company. It includes anti-aircraft guided missiles and air-to-air missiles. In 1988 the Aspide Mk.1 was adopted by the Italian Air Force. The design of the missile is based on the American RIM-7E Sea Sparrow.

Hawk (Homing All the Way Killer) is an American medium-range SAM. It was developed in 1954-1960 by Raytheon company. In 1960 it was adopted for service and since then it has received many modifications and improvements. The U.S. Army stopped using Hawk in 2002. More than 40 000 Hawk and Hawk-missile defense systems were produced. Hawk is capable of intercepting missiles and aircraft. Maximum range of the complex is 50 km.
