According to information published by the “Defense News” on October 25, 2022, the American company Raytheon has delivered two NASAMS air defense missile systems to Ukraine. The U.S. has pledged to deliver two NASAMS within weeks and six more over a longer time frame.
On September 17, 2022, Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brigadier General Pat Ryder announced that two NASAMS air defense missile systems are expected to be delivered to Ukraine in the next two months.
During an interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that was held on September 25, 2022, it was announced that Ukraine has received the first NASAMS air defense missile systems from the United States.
The NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) is an air defense missile system that was developed by the company Kongsberg for the Norwegian armed forces. The current NASAMS
customers base consists of twelve countries, including five NATO and/or EU members.
The most recent capabilities, demonstrating NASAMS’ path of evolution, are the AMRAAM Extended Range missile (AMRAAM ER) and the AIM-9X-2. AMRAAM ER significantly extends the engagement volume of NASAMS, while the AIM-9X-2 is optimized for shorter ranges. Adding multiple missiles proves the flexibility of the architecture and the ability to introduce new capabilities to counter current and future aerial threats.
A NASAMS battery consists of three primary components including the AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel Radar, the AIM-120 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM), and the Fire Distribution Center (FDC).
The NASAMS system is able is to identify, engage, and destroy fixed and rotary-wing aircraft, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). It is designed to protect high-value assets and population centers against air-to-surface targets.
The NASAMS system can engage 72 targets simultaneously in active and passive modes and, using active seeker missiles, can intercept targets beyond visual range. A NASAMS battery includes three launchers, each carrying up to six missiles. The missile is able to hit targets at a range of up to 40 km and at a height of up to 16 km.
