Saab Awarded Contract To Upgrade Swedish Gripen C/D Fighter Jets

Saab has been awarded a contract by the Defence Materiel Administration of Sweden to modernize the Gripen C/D fighter of the Swedish Air Force.

The manufacturer will “provide capability enhancements” to extend the service life of the aircraft to 2035. The order is valued at $52 million.

“Gripen C/D is the backbone of the Swedish Armed Forces today and will continue to be for many years to come, so this is an important order where we will ensure the continued operation and operational relevance of Gripen C/D,” Jonas Hjelm, Head of Saab’s Aeronautics business area, said in a statement.

The JAS 39 Gripen is a light multirole fighter developed by Swedish manufacturer Saab. In addition to the Gripen C/D, the Swedish Air Force is expected to receive 60 JAS 39 E/F, the latest variant of the fighter jet, by 2027. Serial deliveries began on November 24, 2021.
