A significant fire wreck havoc at Russia’s largest Gazprom Omsk oil refinery

On August 1, 2024, a major fire broke out at the Gazpromneft oil refinery in Omsk, Russia, affecting an area of over 300 square meters in the AVT-10 unit, designed for a capacity of 6 million tons of raw materials per year.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, with no reports of external interference. The Omsk oil refinery is the largest in Russia, with an annual processing capacity of 22.23 million tonnes of crude oil. The Russian Emergencies Ministry confirmed the fire at the refinery.

A regional government official said refined product production was unaffected after firefighters extinguished a blaze early Friday at Russian oil company Gazprom Neft’s main refinery, Omsk.

“Nobody was injured or killed. Material damage is estimated at 2 million roubles ($85,430) and production was not stopped,” a local representative of the Emergencies Ministry told Reuters. He said the fire was put out at 03:21 local time on Friday (2021 GMT on Thursday).

The Omsk refinery is the largest belonging to Gazprom Neft, the oil arm of gas export monopoly Gazprom , and has capacity to process 19.5 million tonnes a year of crude oil. “Yesterday evening a fire broke out at the refinery. It was extinguished. There are no victims, and there is not yet any information regarding damage,” Gazprom Neft spokeswoman Natalya Vyalkina said.

The fire is the second at the Omsk refinery since mid-May when one of the plant’s units was temporarily halted. Production was not affected, and nobody was injured.

The Omsk refinery processed 16.5 million tonnes of oil last year, 1.4 percent more than in 2006. Gazprom Neft processed a total of 26.15 million tonnes of oil last year.
