The only bridge linking Belarus and Russia collapsed in Smolensk region, creating major supply problem for the Russian army

The Paninsky Bridge, the main transportation hub between Belarus and Russia, collapsed in the Smolensk region of the Russian Federation.

According to preliminary data, three people were injured. They were in a car and a truck, which fell together with the bridge. The bridge passed over the Moscow-Minsk railroad tracks – the main transportation corridor between Belarus and Russia is blocked.

Russian media reported that at least three people were injured as a result of the bridge collapse. They were in a car and a truck that fell along with the bridge.

“The bridge passed over the Moscow-Minsk railway tracks – the main transport corridor between the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation is blocked,” writes the NEXTA Live channel.

According to Russian channels, one woman died as a result of the bridge collapse. The remaining victims were hospitalized. The number of victims has increased to six.

According to the propaganda TASS , the railway track was damaged as a result of the bridge collapse. Train traffic has been suspended. The causes of the incident have not yet been reported.

An opposition group called the Community of Railway Workers of Belarus said on October 6, 2023 that an explosion damaged a segment of a rail link close to the Azyaryshcha station — a main hub for Russian military personnel, ammunition, and equipment.

It remains unclear what caused the blast. Belarusian authorities have yet to confirm the group’s statement. The authoritarian ruler of Belarus, Alyaksandr Lukashenka, has allowed Moscow to use Belarusian territory as a staging area for its invasion of Ukraine.
