The Taiwanese Air Force just sent a chilling message to the People’s Liberation Army Air Force that it’s locked and loaded to defend its sovereignty.
An image leaked by the Taiwanese Air Force shows its F-16V Block 70 fighter jet using an advanced Sniper targeting pod on a Chinese J-16 electronic warfare jet, without alarming the Chinese pilot that he has been targeted by Taiwanese aircraft.
A Taiwanese F-16V silently tracked a Chinese J-16 fighter long enough without triggering radar alerts, electronic signatures, or cues for the Chinese pilot.
In an actual combat, analysts say the Taiwanese jet could have fired an AIM-9X Sidewinder and destroyed the J-16 before the pilot even realized he was being targeted.
The released image shows a crystal-clear lock on the Chinese fighter’s engine nozzles. This wasn’t an AI-generated photo. It was a crystal-clear warning to Beijing that Taiwan possesses advanced jets and technology that could destroy the Soviet-era J-16 fighter jet.
Incident over the Taiwan Strait
On the evening of May 19, the Republic of China Ministry of National Defence announced that it had detected 22 Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) fighter jets, as well as warships, moving out to sea to conduct joint combat readiness patrols.
The ministry released several rare high-definition surveillance images that indicate the Republic of China Air Force’s F-16 fighters used infrared pods to monitor PLA J-16 fighters. The pods provided a particularly high degree of clarity, to the extent that the serial number “65015” on the vertical tail of a J-16 was clearly visible.

In addition, the Defence Ministry released images of a PLA warship, commenting that “the National Armed Forces are committed to maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.”
On May 19, the F-16V Block 70 also detected J-10, J-20, and J-16 fighters, as well as KJ-500 early-warning and control aircraft. Notably, these three types of aircraft often operate alongside J-20 fighters.
The J-20 and J-16 in particular have patrolled the Taiwan Strait, as China believed these aircraft could provide air superiority, but the recent incident proved otherwise regarding the capabilities of the Chinese air force.
Sniper targeting pod
The Sniper is a family of targeting pods for military aircraft manufactured by Lockheed Martin, providing positive target identification, autonomous tracking, GPS coordinate generation, and precise munition guidance from extended standoff ranges.
Tracking J-20, J-10 and J-16 by the Sniper targeting Pod send a chilling warning to Beijing that Taiwan will respond with full force if China attempt a Taiwan invasion.
The Republic of China Air Force has deployed F-16V fighters for aerial reconnaissance using infrared sensor pods in the past, including in December 2025 in response to the PLA’s launch of Justice Mission 2025 joint military drills around Taiwan Island.
These operations similarly demonstrated real-time intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance activities that the F-16’s AN/AAQ-33 Sniper Advanced Targeting Pod, known colloquially as the Sniper Pod, could provide against mainland Chinese forces. The pod’s air-to-air surveillance range can reach up to 187 kilometres, enabling continuous monitoring of PLA air operations over considerable distances, including over mainland airspace, as the width of the Taiwan Strait itself is only 130 kilometres at its narrowest.
