Europe’s next-generation main battle tank is moving into its design phase after the European Commission approved all submitted deliverables.
Bringing together 11 European countries, the Main ARmoured Tank of Europe (MARTE) initiative aims to develop a complete system that will “dominate future battlefields.”
Swedish firm Saab led work on a Concept of Operations, outlining how the system could be deployed in modern warfare, while partners aligned on a full set of operational requirements across participating nations.
Meanwhile, Spain’s Indra Sistemas conducted a market survey to map out commercially available technologies and subsystems, which could help guide realistic design proposals.
The progress suggests key deliverables are on track, with project leaders KNDS Deutschland and Rheinmetall now set to take the lead as the concept moves forward.
The MARTE project was launched in 2025 with a 20-million-euro ($24-million) grant from the European Defence Fund.
It aims to integrate emerging technologies into a single platform, drawing on lessons from recent conflicts.
Intended to set new standards in multinational defense programs, the consortium is targeting to have a mature design within a 12-month window.
