The International Crimes Tribunal has taken cognizance of two cases of crimes against humanity in connection with the disappearance of opposition figures and people of the same opinion during the long rule of the Awami League and the torture of them in the Task Force Interrogation (TFI) cell of the RAB and the Joint Interrogation Center (JIC). 30 people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, have been named as accused in these two cases.
On Wednesday, a three-member judicial panel led by the Chairman of the Tribunal-1, Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder, took cognizance of the allegations. At the same time, arrest warrants were issued against the accused.
Among the accused is Sheikh Hasina’s former security advisor Tariq Ahmed Siddiqui. In addition, the five former DGFI directors general are Lieutenant General Md. Akbar Hossain, Major General Saiful Abedin, Lieutenant General Saiful Alam, Lieutenant General Ahmed Tabrez Shams Chowdhury and Major General Hamidul Haque.
The tribunal directed that copies of the arrest warrants be sent to the respective military authorities for those still in service and asked the inspector general of police to report on the execution of the warrants.
Besides Benazir, Khurshid and Harun, other key accused include several senior RAB officials. They include seven former additional DGs Lieutenant Colonel Anwar Latif Khan, Brigadier General Md Jahangir Alam, Brigadier General Tofael Mostafa Sarwar, Colonel AKM Azad, Brigadier General Kamrul Hasan, Brigadier General Md Mahbub Alam, and Colonel Abdullah Al Momen.
Many people were victims of disappearances during the Awami League regime from 2009 to 2024. Of these, more than a hundred people have not yet been found. Some were killed and their bodies were also disappeared.
After the fall of Sheikh Hasina on August 5 last year, the victims of disappearances were released from prison. One of them is Barrister Mir Ahmed Bin Kashem, Abdullahil Aman Azmi and many others.
In light of the complaints of these victims, these two cases of disappearances were filed with the International Crimes Tribunal. In continuation of this, the prosecution filed a formal complaint this morning.
