Ukraine’s Ambassador to Israel Yevgen Korniychuk said that his country could recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s “one and only capital” soon, and hopes to open a branch of its embassy in the city in the coming year, during a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, reported The Times of Israel.

Korniychuk told reporters that he believes that recognition is a matter of months, not years, but that Zelensky has certain preconditions in the security and defense relationship between the countries before that can happen.

The remarks came at an event marking 30 years of Israel-Ukraine ties, attended by Jerusalem Affairs Minister Ze’ev Elkin, who grew up in Ukraine.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Alexey Reznikov visited Israel in November 2021 for the 12th meeting of the Israel-Ukraine Joint Economic Committee, where the issue of Jerusalem was raised, according to sources with knowledge of Reznikov’s meetings.

Ukraine is seeking greater cooperation with Israel on air defense technology amid fears of a Russian invasion, the Eastern European country’s foreign minister said Wednesday. An Israel TV report specified that Ukraine has been in contact with Israel regarding the Iron Dome missile defense system, other missile warning technologies, and cyber defense technology.

According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, the country is interested in Israeli defense technologies.

During a press conference, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said there was “very deep cooperation… under the current circumstances” between Kyiv and Jerusalem, without elaborating.

“We are also interested in deepened defense cooperation on defense technology, in particular related to air defense,” he told a reporter from the Kan public broadcaster.

Kan TV quoted a Ukrainian source saying Ukraine has discussed the Iron Dome system “several times” with Israel, as well as other missile defense and cyber defense systems and technologies.

SIPRI estimates that arms exports to Azerbaijan accounted for 17 per cent of Israel’s total exports of major arms in 2016–20, showing the growing importance of Azerbaijan for the Israeli arms industry. In 2016 President Aliyev stated that Azerbaijan had spent $5 billion on military equipment from Israel. Israeli high-tech weapons were responsible for destroying Armenian military’s Russian-origin weapons.

Recall that the “Iron Dome” is a tactical missile defense system designed to protect against unguided tactical missiles with a flight range of 4 to 70 kilometers. Developed by the Israeli company Rafael. Each battery can protect an area of 150 square kilometers.
