The Anti-Corruption Commission filed a case on Sunday against one serving and three former officials of the Bangladesh Navy, and the owner of a construction firm, on charges of irregularities and abuse of power in the sale of a ship owned by Khulna Shipyard Limited.
Commission assistant director Mahmudul Hasan Shuvro filed case number 8 with the integrated district office in Khulna against five people, said anti-corruption commission deputy director Aktarul Islam.
One of the accused is Bangladesh Navy commodore Mohammad Matiur Rahman, also a former commander and general manager (finance) of Khulna Shipyard Limited.
Commodore Matiur is now the commander of the Naval Training and Doctrine Command at New Mooring of Chattogram.
The other accused are Khulna Shipyard Limited, former commander and acting manager (admin) AM Rana, former general manager of production and retired commodore Anisur Rahman, former managing director and retired commodore Shawkat Imran, and M/S SB Construction owner Saiduzzaman Sayeed.
According to the case document, the accused colluded and sold the MV Sreejani launch of Khulna Shipyard Limited to M/S SB Construction at a revised price of Tk 25.10 lakh, instead of the maximum quoted price of Tk 35.85 lakh, through forgery and by violating the rules of Khulna Shipyard Limited.
The accused embezzled Tk 10.75 lakh in the process, according to the case document. The incident took place between July 8 and September 28 of 2010.
There have been allegations of corruption and investigations involving some senior Bangladeshi military and naval figures in recent years.
Bangladeshi media outlets have also published allegations involving the current Navy Chief Admiral Mohammad Nazmul Hassan. However, these claims are controversial and not widely confirmed by major international news organizations.
Bangladesh has seen broader anti-corruption investigations after the 2024 political upheaval, with inquiries involving politicians, military-linked officials, regulators, and state institutions.
