It’s like a scene from a movie in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, in its busiest New Market area. The top terrorist, Khandaker Naeem Ahmed Titon, who was awarded a reward, was shot dead in public during the evening rush hour.
This name, known in Dhaka’s underworld for years, is now a hot topic in the criminal world. A question has been swirling since the incident. However, it is revenge for the murder of former army chief Aziz Ahmed’s brother, Sayeed Ahmed Tipu.
On May 20, 2024, the United States Department of State imposed sanctions on former Bangladesh Army Chief General Aziz Ahmed due to his involvement in “significant corruption”.
The U.S. stated that Ahmed engaged in significant corruption, specifically alleging he interfered in public processes while working closely with his brothers (who had criminal convictions) to facilitate their illicit activities.
The sanctions bar Aziz Ahmed and his immediate family members from entering the United States.
Reports indicated that Ahmed helped his brother, Harris Ahmed, evade criminal charges and obtain military contracts and improper surveillance equipment.
The sanctions highlight his brothers, Tofail Ahmed Joseph (who received a presidential pardon) and Harris Ahmed (a convicted criminal on the run).
Before becoming army chief, he served as the Director General of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
These sanctions are part of the U.S. efforts to promote accountability for corruption and human rights abuses globally
This gruesome murder took place in the Battala area next to New Market on Tuesday evening. According to eyewitnesses, assailants on a motorcycle first fired two rounds at Titon while he was walking quickly.
Then a gunman ran up and fired more shots. Even though Titon fell to the ground, the attackers did not stop there. The last shot was also fired by putting a gun to his head to ensure his death.
The whole incident happened in just one minute. When locals rescued Titon in a serious condition and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the doctor declared him dead.
Hospital sources said that bullet marks were found on his head, hands and body in various places. Multiple sources in the criminal world claim that this was a revenge killing that had been planned for a long time.
In 1999, former army chief Aziz Ahmed’s brother, Syed Ahmed Tipu, was killed by brush fire in the Nikunja area of Dhaka’s Airport Road.
Titon was directly involved in that controversial murder. He also served a long prison term in that case. Sources say that a powerful criminal gang has been keeping a close eye on Titon since his release from prison.
Another top terrorist based in Dubai, Joseph Ahmed, who is the brother of the deceased Tipu, is said to have planned the murder. On his orders, a shooter known as Killer Badal came to the country a month ago and started monitoring Titon’s movements.
A teenage eyewitness said that the attackers fired blank bullets to spread panic while they were fleeing. Later, they quickly fled towards the BGB gate on a motorcycle. New Market Police Station said the incident is being investigated seriously.
However, no official information has been released about the motive for the murder yet. But Dhaka’s criminal world says this is not just a murder but the terrible outcome of a bloody dispute that has raged for many years between General Aziz Ahmed’s underworld gangs versus another gang since General Aziz became the Border Guard chief. General Aziz Ahmed started his gangland criminal enterprise long before he became the Chief of the Bangladesh Army.
