Ukraine Received Turkish Firtana 155mm Self-propelled Howitzers

The Ukrainian Defense Forces are preparing to adopt new self-propelled howitzers. Ukraine received the Turkish T-155 Firtina artillery units.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine are using self-propelled howitzers from various countries, including the French CAESAR, the American M109A6 Paladin, the German Panzerhaubitze 2000 and the Polish AHS Krab. They will soon be joined by Turkey’s T-155 Firtina systems.

Brigadier General Oleksiy Gromov, deputy head of the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, announced this. He also announced the arrival of the Swedish Archer howitzers.

The T-155 Firtina is the longest-range howitzer in service with the Turkish army. It is equipped with a 155/52 caliber cannon that can destroy enemy targets at a maximum distance of 30 km and 40 km, depending on the type of ammunition.

Firtina is a localized version of Hanwha Defense’s Korean K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzer. It differs in having a Turkish fire control system. All components except the engine are manufactured in Turkey.

Turkey is already working on the next generation T-155 Firtina. The Firtina II howitzer will receive an upgraded fire control system, increased firing rate and thermal sights, while the number of crew will be reduced from five to four.
