U.S. Army Ordered 480 HIMARS Launchers And Multiple Variant Of Rockets

The HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems have demonstrated their effectiveness from the first days of their arrival in Ukraine. The U.S. Army was impressed with the performance of the M142, and ordered up to 480 systems.

The U.S. Department of Defense will purchase 480 multiple-launch rocket systems over five years if the plan is 100% complete. The purchase of 24-96 HIMARS annually is planned for the 2024-2028 fiscal years.

In total, the U.S. Army could receive 480 multiple rocket launchers by the end of 2028. There are approximately 600 HIMARS and M270 MLRS systems in service now. Thus, the total number may amount to more than 1,000. But this is on the assumption that the US will not decommission any MLRSs.

The total value of the contract will be more than $1.5 billion, not including ammunition. The United States will produce not only GMLRS rockets with a launch range of 84 kilometers for itself, but also more expensive ATACMS ballistic missiles. Also let us not forget about prospective GMLRS-ER and PrSM with maximum range of up to 150 km and up to 500 km respectively.

The total quantities for HIMARS include all potential variants. Additional supporting efforts include, but are not limited to: recurring production, obsolescence, engineering changes, system engineering and program management (SEPM), integrated logistics support (ILS), spares, New Equipment Training, and other support equipment.
