Nigerian Navy received four Leonardo AW139 Helicopter

The Nigerian Navy received yesterday the first of the four AW139 from Leonardo Helicopters Division. The delivery, according to local sources, is part of the contract signed in 2018 between the Ministry of Defense and the then AugustaWestland for four helicopters.

In 2018 the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency passed its unique AW139, purchased in 2018, to the Nigerian Navy. The helicopter, delivered with an Italian “experimental” serial number CSX81969, had been spotted with the Nigerian Navy livery in November 2019 above the skies of Venegono.

The AW139 can carry up to 15 passengers and is powered by two Pratt and Whitney PT6C-67C. It is one of the most successful products of the Italian company with over 1,000 copies already delivered.

The Nigerian Navy would also be in talks with Airbus Helicopter for the supply of up to three AS565MBe to be used probably on the two Hamilton-class cutters sold by the United States in 2013.
