Brigadier General Miftah Uddin Ahmed has been taken into army custody in connection with the killing of Ekramul Haque in Cox’s Bazar. Directorate of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has confirmed this information.
Ahmed has been sanctioned by the United States for human rights violations, specifically for extrajudicial killings in Bangladesh. Washington’s sanctions against Bangladesh’s Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) police force, which is accused of involvement in hundreds of extrajudicial killings, have drawn a sharp reaction in Dhaka.
“NGOs have alleged that RAB and other Bangladeshi law enforcement are responsible for more than 600 disappearances since 2009, nearly 600 extrajudicial killings since 2018, and torture. Some reports suggest these incidents target opposition party members, journalists, and human rights activists,” the statement added.
In a separate statement, the US State Department announced travel bans on Benazir Ahmed, the current inspector-general of the Bangladesh Police and former director-general of RAB.
Also included is Miftah Uddin Ahmed, former lieutenant colonel and former commanding officer of RAB Unit 7, now a brigadier general of the Bangladesh Army.
Both were targeted for their “involvement in the May 2018 extrajudicial killing of Teknaf City Municipal Councilor Ekramul Haque in the Bangladeshi coastal district of Cox’s Bazar.”
During the 2018 incident, he was a lieutenant. He was the captain of RAB-7 in the rank of colonel. Further action is being taken against him as per law, ISPR said.
The prosecution filed a formal complaint at the International Criminal Tribunal on Sunday in the case of crimes against humanity in the murder of Teknaf’s former municipal councilor Ekramul Haque.
In that case, 11 people, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was deposed in the mass uprising, were accused. Miftah Uddin Ahmed, who was the captain of RAB-7 in Chittagong at that time, is on the list of accused. Then Cox’s Bazar was also under RAB-7.
The Army took Brigadier General Miftah Uddin into custody a day after filing a formal complaint in the tribunal in the Ekramul murder case.
Ekramul was killed in a ‘gunfight’ in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar on the night of May 26, 2018. He was the president of Upazila Jubo League (currently banned) for 12 years.
