Lieutenant General (retired) Mujibur Rahman was instrumental in establishing Indian RAW networks inside Bangladesh’s DGFI, Army, Navy and Air Forces

How did Lieutenant General (retd) Mujibur Rahman, the much-discussed key figure in the Indian intelligence agency ‘RAW’ network in Bangladesh, escape? Investigations have revealed that General Mujib fled to India through the Dhobaura border in Mymensingh some time after August 5 last year.

He was under the surveillance of the Army Security Unit before escaping. According to sources, General Mujib is currently staying in Delhi and is in touch with Sheikh Hasina. He is involved in a conspiracy to overthrow the interim government and return Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh.

According to reliable sources, General Mujib is behind various types of sabotage in Bangladesh. Another army officer, Major General (retd) Akbar, who is stationed in Delhi, and police officer Monirul are also working with him. Another source has revealed that former DGFI chief Akbar, who was absconding after August 5, recently visited Dhaka for a day.

Lieutenant General (retd) Mujibur Rahman was a very trusted and trusted army officer of Sheikh Hasina. He and General Tariq Siddique were closely involved in the infiltration of ‘RAW’ into the Armed Forces and the police. General Mujib is identified as the coordinator of ‘RAW’ in Bangladesh. After the arrest of Squadron Leader Abdullah Ibn Altaf, who worked as a shadow recruiter of ‘RAW’ in the Air Force, a comprehensive investigation revealed the relationship between ‘RAW’s’ network in the military and General Mujib. In order to keep the Awami League and Sheikh Hasina in power, General Mujib and members of his network threatened the security system of Bangladesh. With the help of Mujib, ‘RAW’ had established a position in various forces. ‘RAW’ even tried to implement a conspiracy to weaken the patriotic armed forces, which are the symbols of our independence and sovereignty.

It has been confirmed by reliable sources that General Mujib also tried his best to stage a pro-India coup in the army during the July Revolution. First on August 2, 2024 and then on August 6, the day after Sheikh Hasina’s escape, he tried to stage a coup but failed. General Mujib and Tariq Siddique also played a special role in making Sheikh Hasina’s escape to India a ‘rescue mission’ with the help of the Indian intelligence agency ‘RAW’ and the authorities of that country a success. On August 5, Sheikh Hasina fled to Delhi from Kurmitola Airport in Tejgaon at 3:09 PM in a C-130J aircraft of the Bangladesh Air Force.

Reliable sources also revealed that Squadron Leader Abdullah Ibne Altaf, an identified RAW agent of the Bangladesh Air Force, was arrested on August 14 last year. During the investigation of the incident, Lieutenant General Mujib was quickly transferred as the GOC of the Mymensingh Cantonment Artdoc (ARTDOC) and reached the place of transfer on the same day in a helicopter of the Army Aviation Group. The same helicopter in which Lieutenant General Mujib reached Mymensingh Cantonment, the GOC working there was brought back to Dhaka. That incident was unprecedented.

Mujib was also under the surveillance of the Army Security Unit in Mymensingh Cantonment. But from there he managed to escape to India by crossing the Dhobaura border. According to a source, the entire incident was planned and he got the opportunity to escape with the help of a group in the army. General Mujib was dismissed from the Ministry of Defense on September 12 last year. Questions have been raised about his escape and dismissal. According to security analysts, if a military officer escapes, according to the law, i.e. the Manual of Bangladesh Military Law (MBML), if someone is found absent from work without permission, he is obliged to be declared AWOL (Absent Without Leave) and later on he is declared a ‘deserter’. But in this case, he was only retired without being found guilty. According to military experts, the matter is not only suspicious; rather, the entire matter has been covered up so that no further inquiry or investigation is carried out in this regard.

Experts also said that if he is absent from work or declared a ‘deserter’, an arrest warrant should be issued. In this case, a court of inquiry should be formed. After arresting, there is an obligation to make the accused face a ‘court martial’. Otherwise, he is dismissed directly so that no further investigation is conducted. However, he is accused of attempting to remove the current army chief, General Waqar-uz-Zaman, by staging a coup and imposing martial law.

Mujib’s matter is serious, investigation should be conducted: Major General Muniruzzaman

Eminent security analyst Major General (retd) M Muniruzzaman explained the law regarding the absence of an army officer without leave and told Amar Desh, “It is very rare for an army member to be absent without leave. It is a major punishable offense. If such an incident happens to someone, a court of inquiry is formed under the Army Act and strict disciplinary action is taken against him. What is being heard about General Mujib is a very serious matter. How he escaped should be investigated seriously.”

Coup attempt fails

The day after Sheikh Hasina’s escape, Lieutenant General Mujib made an attempt to impose martial law or a state of emergency in the army by means of a coup on August 6. Sources say that several other army officers trusted by Sheikh Hasina were involved in this attempt. Among them were the then DGFI DG Major General (retd) Hamidul Haque, NSI DG Mohammad Hossain Al Morshed, Major General (retd) Ziaul Ahsan, Lieutenant General (retd) Akbar Hossain, Lieutenant General (retd) Tabrez Shams Chowdhury, Lieutenant General (retd) Mohammad Shahinul Haque and Lieutenant General (retd) Saiful Alam. The attempt failed due to the prudence of Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman. Intelligence sources say that General Mujib had previously attempted a coup on August 2.

Mujib is the mastermind behind various crimes including disappearances and crossfires

General Mujib, as the coordinator of ‘RAW’, not only undermined the security system in the country, he was the mastermind behind various crimes and misused his power to commit widespread corruption. These include disappearances, crossfires, mirror house torture, etc.

Former Army Chief Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan About Mujib

Mujib was involved in all the disappearances and crossfires while he was the additional director of RAB. Former Army Chief General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan (IKB) wrote about Mujib in his Facebook post ‘My experiences with BGB, RAB, SSF and Ansar’: “What bothered me the most was the kidnapping and killing of ordinary citizens, political activists or suspects by our officers posted in RAB. Young, career-oriented officers were sent to RAB, worked there for a few days and returned with a character as if they were professional killers. The same trend was observed among Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs), Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and soldiers. Immediately after taking charge as the Army Chief, I wanted them to be brought back to the army. When I told the Prime Minister about the matter, he gave me a positive signal, even saying that RAB is worse than the National Guard. But in the end, nothing materialized.

A few days later, I called Colonel (later Lieutenant General and DG SSF) Mujib—who was then ADG of RAB—and asked him to keep Lieutenant Colonel (now Major General) Zia under control and ensure that no more ‘crossfires’ occurred. Colonel Mujib promised me this and seemed quite worried as he left. Over the next few days, I checked the newspapers and magazines, and there was no news of any new crossfires—which gave me some mental relief. After that, Colonel Mujib came to me several times and informed me that crossfires had indeed stopped. But after a few days, I realized that incidents were indeed happening but that the news was being suppressed. The situation deteriorated further when Colonel Mujib left RAB and was transferred elsewhere, and Colonel Zia—who was previously in charge of the intelligence wing of RAB—took charge as ADG RAB immediately after the arrival of the new DG Benazir.

Then I got information from the Army Security Unit (ASU) that Colonel Zia had kept a guard in his residential tower, was keeping weapons in the house and had installed CCTV in the entire flat. He was immediately told to remove the guard, remove the cameras, refrain from keeping weapons in the house and follow the military rules and regulations in the official quarters. Later, his behavior became more erratic. Director Military Intelligence (DMI) Brigadier General Jaglul tried to convince him but Colonel Zia did not pay any attention to it. Later, the Commandant of the Army Security Unit (ASU) Brigadier General Fazal called him for a talk. Later, Brigadier General Fazal told me that while talking to Zia, it felt like he was talking to someone whose brain was stuffed with stones or pieces of bricks—there was no way to explain.”

Shapla Massacre and Holy Artisan Attack

Mujib was also one of the planners and operators of the most brutal attack on Hefazat at Shapla Chattar on May 5, 2013. RAB’s Ziaul Ahsan was created by Mujib. A source in RAB said that Ziaul was a child to Mujib. Although Ziaul’s name has been discussed as much for his atrocities, the name of Chatur Mujib has not been as much. Mujib was the leader of Tularam College Chhatra League in Narayanganj. Since 2009, he has worked in the interests of Awami League and ‘RAW’. Especially while in RAB, he was involved in the suppression of political dissidents. Mujib led the joint force operation called ‘Operation Thunderbolt’, which was conducted around the so-called Holy Artisan militant attack.

Mujib’s bribery, corruption and illegal assets

The ACC has filed a case against Lieutenant General Mujib and his wife Tasreen Mujib on charges of corruption. In light of the ACC’s case, the court has ordered the freezing of their 34 bank accounts and the seizure of two flats in Dhaka, Mirpur Cantonment, Khilkhet and Purbachal areas in their names. On April 5, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md. Zakir Hossain issued this order. In addition, the court ordered the seizure of another flat in the Cantonment area, a house in Purbachal and a tin shed house with land in Savar.

The ACC told reporters that Lieutenant General (retd.) Mujibur Rahman has acquired illegal assets in the name of family members through abuse of power and irregularities and corruption from various important positions. Huge amounts of bribery and corruption have been deposited and withdrawn in his bank accounts.

Supreme Court lawyer and retired army major Barrister M Sarwar Hossain held a press conference about the corruption of Lieutenant General (retd) Mujib and filed a complaint with the ACC on March 16. In the complaint, he said that General Mujib served as DGFI, NSI, 46 Brigade Commander, DG SSF for five years, Quarter Master General (QMG) at the army headquarters and lastly as Commandant, Artdoc. These posts are important posts in the army. Using this post, he committed unlimited corruption. The amount of his corruption is at least 2,100 crore taka. Barrister Sarwar Hossain said that Lieutenant General (retd) Mujib has two flats in New York. He smuggled at least 2 million dollars or 250 crore taka there to buy those flats. His land area in Purbachal, Dhaka is about 20 bighas. In addition, he has booked 10 plots in Army Green City. He has 9 flats in BJ Tower, adjacent to the Dhaka Cantonment, which is located in the ECB premises. When General Mujib was DG SSF, he used to take bribes of 1 million taka from businessmen to meet Sheikh Hasina. He also took several expensive brand cars as gifts from businessmen.
