Russia has lost 180 artillery systems in the past three days, according to figures provided by Ukraine’s military.
The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces posts figures on Russia’s troop and equipment losses as part of its daily update on the war, which began on February 24, 2022. It said Russia lost 62 artillery systems in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 22,256 lost so far. In the past three days, Moscow lost nearly 200 artillery systems, it said.
The high figure highlights the intensity of fighting between Ukraine and Russia as the war approaches its fourth year. On January 21, Ukraine’s military said Russia lost a record amount of equipment—300 pieces—in a single day.
Estimates of casualty numbers vary, with Ukraine’s figures usually exceeding those of its Western allies. Moscow, like Kyiv, rarely shares information on the number of casualties it has sustained in the war.
After President Donald Trump entered office on Monday, he claimed nearly 1 million Russian troops and 700,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since the war began. Newsweek couldn’t independently verify the figures, but they far exceed official estimates to date.
He has called for an end to the war, and pledged during his election campaign that he would help in brokering peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. He called the war “ridiculous” in a lengthy post on Truth Social on Wednesday, and urged his Russian counterpart to stop the war to prevent more lives from being lost.
President Donald Trump said on Truth Social on Wednesday: “I’m not looking to hurt Russia. I love the Russian people, and always had a very good relationship with President Putin—and this despite the Radical Left’s Russia, Russia, Russia HOAX. We must never forget that Russia helped us win the Second World War, losing almost 60,000,000 lives in the process. All of that being said, I’m going to do Russia, whose Economy is failing, and President Putin, a very big FAVOR.
“Settle now, and STOP this ridiculous War! IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE. If we don’t make a ‘deal,’ and soon, I have no other choice but to put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries. Let’s get this war, which never would have started if I were President, over with! We can do it the easy way, or the hard way—and the easy way is always better. It’s time to ‘MAKE A DEAL.’ NO MORE LIVES SHOULD BE LOST!!!”
Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a message to Donald Trump on Monday: “We are open to dialogue with the new U.S. administration on the Ukrainian conflict. Its goal should not be a short truce, not some kind of respite for regrouping forces and rearmament with the aim of subsequently continuing the conflict, but a long-term peace based on respect for the legitimate interests of all people, all nations that live in this region.”
Both Russia and Ukraine will continue to lose significant amounts of equipment as clashes intensify across multiple sectors, including in Russia’s Kursk region, and in Ukraine’s Donetsk region.
