No IFF: Russia shot down its own Su-35 near occupied Sevastopol

A Russian Su-35 fighter jet was shot down in friendly fire on March 28 near occupied Sevastopol, confirmed the head of the city’s occupation authorities Mykhailo Razvozhaev.

“A military plane fell into the sea… Civilian objects were not damaged. The pilot ejected. He was picked up by rescuers of the Sevastopol rescue service at a distance of 200 meters from the shore. His life is not in danger,” the message states.

The lack of identification of friend-or-foe (IFF), networking, and datalink were two primary reasons the Russian Air Force did not operate in a formation and operating within occupied territories of Ukraine.

According to preliminary data, the plane could have been mistakenly shot down by Russian anti-aircraft defense, writes the anonymous Telegram channel of the Cheka-OGPU.

Officially, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation did not comment on the information about the downed plane.

Since August 2022, the sounds of explosions can be heard in Crimea almost every day . In an interview with Radio Liberty in August 2023, the head of the Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense, Kyrylo Budanov, stated the ability of Ukrainian forces to reach any point in occupied Crimea to defeat the enemy. According to him, there are many different options for the de-occupation of Crimea, but “it is impossible without military, combat operations.”
