France To Supply CEASAR 155mm Howitzers To Ukraine

According to information published on the Twitter account of “Dmytro Kuleba” from the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs on September 22, 2022,, Ukraine and France agree on the delivery of a new batch of CAESAR 155mm wheeled self-propelled howitzer to the Ukrainian army.

On April 22, 2022, French President Emmanuel Macron announced military aid to Ukraine including French-made CAESAR 155mm self-propelled howitzers and tens of thousands of shells. On June 16, during a visit to Kyiv, President Macron announced France would provide another 6 CAESAR 155mm self-propelled howitzers in addition to the 12 that had already been delivered.

According to information published by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on May 28, 2022, the CAESAR 155mm wheeled self-propelled howitzers donated by France had already demonstrated their effectiveness and were used by Ukrainian soldiers to destroy Russian tanks, BMD airborne infantry fighting vehicles, and trucks.

The CAESAR is a wheeled self-propelled howitzer designed and developed by the French company Nexter Systems. It was one of the first artillery howitzers based on a military truck chassis. It enters in production in 2006 and was delivered to the French army in 2007 to perform trial tests. The first production Caesar system was delivered to the French Army in July 2008.

The CAESAR consists of one 155 mm/52 caliber cannon mounted at the rear of a truck chassis in 6×6 or 8×8 configurations. The 155mm/52 caliber of the CAESAR can fire a wide range of ammunition: among others, LU family (HE, Illuminating, Smoke and Practice) filled with insensitive or conventional explosives, the BONUS (Anti-Tank, smart), ERFB NR (Explosive Extended-Range Full-Bore), as well as the new KATANA 155mm, guided artillery ammunition. It has a firing range from 4.5 to 40 km and a high level of accuracy with the LU family.

The CAESAR has a crew of 3 to 5 soldiers. It can maintain a firing rate of six to eight rounds a minute in sustained fire, or three rounds in 15 seconds in rapid fire.

The CAESAR howitzers delivered to Ukraine are based on an ARQUUS 6×6 military truck. It can reach a maximum road speed of 90 km/h, or 50 km/h in off-road conditions, with a maximum cruising range of 600 km.
