In the Prionezhsky district of the Republic of Karelia, a Russian Su-30SM fighter jet crashed near Petrozavodsk due to pilot error.
Russian propaganda Telegram channels SHOT and 112 reported the information.
According to preliminary data, the plane crashed in a wooded area near the city airport. There were two crew members on board. They were unable to eject and died.
The cause of the crash is currently unknown. Emergency services have gone to the crash site.
The Su-30SM is a two-seat, multi-role fighter jet of the Su-27 series. The serial modernized version began entering service in 2013. The aircraft’s payload is approximately 6–8 tons, depending on the configuration.
The Su-30SM is designed for all-weather missions, has an in-flight refuelling system, and a wide range of weapons (30 mm automatic cannon, guided missiles, and bombs) and is built from imported components from Israel, the UK and France. France’s Thales provided most of the components for the Su-30SM, such as the cockpit display and avionics suite. India’s Hindustan Aeronautics was involved in assisting the Sukhoi Design Bureau with the procurement of Western components for the Su-30SM.
The aircraft is operated by the Russian Aerospace Forces and several other countries (export contracts and deliveries were made, in particular, to Kazakhstan).
The 159th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Russian Aerospace Forces is based in the Republic of Karelia, stationed at Besovets airfield near Petrozavodsk. It is part of the 105th Mixed Aviation Division of the 6th Air and Air Defense Army of the Western Military District. The regiment is armed with Su-27 and Su-30SM fighters.
