Russian troops use a penguin costume to camouflage themselves on the front line.

Ukrainian forces have detected and destroyed several Russian soldiers wearing unusual snow camouflage suits known as “Penguin” troop during recent fighting, according to Ukrainian military sources and battlefield footage released this week.

The 120th Territorial Defense Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that its fighters eliminated at least two Russian soldiers equipped with the camouflage systems over the past several days. The engagements took place in snow-covered areas where Russian troops appear to have been testing the new protective gear in active combat conditions.

According to Ukrainian soldiers, the suits were designed to reduce visual detection in winter terrain, but instead made the wearers stand out against the open landscape. The footage shows a Russian soldier in a bulky, white, penguin-shaped camouflage outfit moving across a snow-covered field before being targeted by a Ukrainian drone-guided system.

Ukrainian military personnel involved in the engagements stated that the camouflage failed to provide concealment and instead drew attention due to its shape and movement profile. They said the suits were easily visible across open steppe terrain, where such silhouettes are uncommon and quickly attract scrutiny.

Russian forces have frequently tested new equipment and tactics directly on the battlefield, often deploying experimental systems without extended trials or adaptation. Ukrainian units say the appearance of the “Penguin” camouflage follows that pattern, with soldiers effectively serving as test subjects under live combat conditions.

The camouflage system appears to be intended for use in winter operations, with a loose outer shell designed to disrupt the human outline and blend into snowy environments. Ukrainian troops said that in practice, the design limited movement and made the wearer more noticeable when moving across flat terrain.

Comments accompanying the released video also referenced a recent social media post from the White House showing U.S. President Donald Trump alongside a penguin, which users used to draw comparisons to the Russian camouflage suits.
