EU Pledges Fighter Jets Transfers to Ukraine, Sweden Breaks Neutrality

Poland still operates the MiG-29. Some could be transferred to Ukraine as part of a new €450 million package of so-called lethal aid.

The European Union (EU) has said it will provide fighter jets to Ukraine as part of a €450 million ($502.3 million) support package of lethal aid. European foreign ministers agreed to the package, along with an additional €50 million in nonlethal equipment, after an informal meeting on Feb. 27.

EU countries will send “fighter jets” to Ukraine at Kyiv’s request to help it counter the Russian air and land assault, the bloc’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Sunday.

“We’re going to provide even fighting jets. We’re not talking about just ammunition. We are providing more important arms to go to a war,” he told a press conference.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has told the EU “they need the kind of fighting jets that the Ukrainian army is able to operate… some member states have these kinds of planes,” Borrell said.

Sweden Breaks Neutrality

Sweden will send, among other things, 5,000 anti-tank weapons to Ukraine to help it defend against Russian aggression.

“Sweden is now proposing direct support for Ukraine’s armed forces,” Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said on Sunday, Reuters informs.

The Main Battle Tank and Light Anti-tank Weapon (MBT LAW), also known as the NLAW, is a joint British and Swedish short-range fire-and-forget anti-tank missile system.

The support includes 135,000 field rations, 5,000 helmets, 5,000 body shields and 5,000 anti-tank weapons.

Russian president Vladimir Putin declared war on Ukraine on February 24 and launched a large-scale invasion. For the fourth day already, Russian troops have been shelling and destroying key infrastructure. Missiles hit residential buildings.

Martial law was imposed in Ukraine and general mobilization was announced.

According to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Russia lost 4,300 servicemen over the three days of the war.

Ukraine officially filed a lawsuit against the Russian Federation at the UN International Court of Justice in The Hague.
