Defense Minister of Armenia Vagharshak Harutyunyan received Ambassador of France to Armenia Jonathan Lacôte, accompanied by Military Attaché of the French Embassy in Armenia Danny Pitt (residence in Tbilisi). France and Armenia have held “successful” negotiations on military cooperation, learned GDC citing ARMENPRESS.
As ARMENPRESS was informed from the press service of the Defense Ministry of Armenia, during the meeting issues related to regional security and bilateral defense cooperation were discussed at the meeting. The Defense Minister of Armenia presented the security atmosphere of the region, the existing challenges and expected developments.
Ambassador Lacôte noted that during and after the military operations the situation has always been in the focus of the attention of the French leadership. They always spoke out about concerns and efforts are made for a final stabilization of the situation.
Speaking about bilateral cooperation in defense sphere, the Ambassador informed about a number of programs aimed at the multidimensional development of cooperation, which was accepted by the Armenian Defense Minister.
The head of the Armenian Defense Ministry and the French Ambassador held a meeting, during which they discussed military cooperation between the two countries. According to local media reports, within the framework of the meeting, certain agreements were reached regarding the provision of military assistance to Armenia by France, which, according to a number of analysts, indicates the intentions of France, which, by the way, is a NATO member, to weaken the further presence of Russia in Armenia.
It is known that within the next month, France and Armenia intend to implement a number of measures to ensure security in the region, which, as expected, does not exclude the likelihood of the appearance of French peacekeepers in the region, while the supply of weapons for the needs of Armenia is also quite probable. in order to maintain the country’s combat readiness in the event of further negative actions by Turkey and Azerbaijan in the region.
It should be noted that today the Russian military maintains its presence on the territory of Armenia, while, despite the information that appeared earlier, the creation of an additional military base of the RF Armed Forces in southern Armenia is not yet planned.
France’s population includes between 400,000 to 600,000 people of Armenian origin and President Emmanuel Macron has been careful not to back one side or the other in the conflict. However, he has increasingly come under fire from opponents at home, who argue that he did not do enough to help Yerevan.
In a statement on Thursday, Macron’s office said he had sought to reassure Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, reported Reuters.
