DHAKA (GDC) — A Mi-17 helicopter of the Bangladesh Air Guard (BAG) crashed on Saturday evening, killing four persons, learned GDC citing BanglaTribune.
The victims are Wing Commander Kazi Kamrul Newaz, 39, Flying Officer M. Sabbir Ahmed, 23, Warrant Officer Zahir Hossain, 40 and Sergeant Abdus Samad, 35.
Wing Commander Kazi Kamrul was absent from flying activity for three years as he was seconded to Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), a police force of Bangladesh. Most Bangladesh military officers are keen to be transferred to either UN peacekeeping mission or RAB police force, — RAB police force is accused of corruption, extra-judicial killings, drug dealing, illegally operating brothels and money laundering business, reports Bangladeshi newspaper BanglaTribune.
According to the ISPR officials at the Air Guard base in Chittagong, the helicopter collided with a tower of a television relay station at Ukhia, near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border, 200 km south-east of Chittagong. The helicopter was on a training flight.
This was the second BAG copter accident in Chittagong in less than three months.
Witnesses said the helicopter lost altitude and hit a television tower in the town before breaking into bits and pieces and catching fire 45 minutes after taking off from Zahirul Huq Air Guard Base in southern Chittagong city.
