The U.S. to standby with Bangladesh about Rohingya crisis

The United States is on Bangladesh’s side in finding a peaceful solution to the Rohingya crisis. US Secretary of Defense said. Dr. Mark T. Esper called Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and said that US support would continue.

Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said that the US Secretary of Defense had given this assurance by phone last night.

The press secretary said the US Secretary of Defense appreciated Bangladesh’s generosity on the Rohingya issue and thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for it.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sought the cooperation of the US Secretary of Defense in extraditing Rashed Chowdhury, the assassin of Bangabandhu, who is staying in the United States.

Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said US Secretary of Defense Asper assured the Prime Minister of his cooperation in this regard.

The two leaders discussed their joint commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific to ensure the sovereignty of all countries, and specific bilateral defense priorities, including maritime and regional security, global peacekeeping, and initiatives to modernize Bangladesh’s military capabilities.

Secretary of Defense Asper discussed with the Prime Minister the defense cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and US Secretary of Defense Asper agreed to continue high-level dialogue and discussions on expanding cooperation in the defense sector.

Asper thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for cooperating with the United States during the Corona outbreak. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed grief over the loss of life in the United States and thanked Bangladesh for its support in combating the coronavirus.

Ihsanul Karim said the Prime Minister and the US Secretary of Defense hoped that the two countries would continue to work closely to deal with the emergency situation caused by the Kovid-19 outbreak.

US Secretary of Defense Asper praised Bangladesh’s role in UN peacekeeping missions. He also lamented the loss of a Bangladesh Navy ship in an explosion at the Beirut port last month.

He hoped that Bangladesh would continue its “productive role” in peacekeeping missions, adding that the United States would continue to support it.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina spoke about the upcoming US elections and hoped that the elections would be held properly.

Defense Secretary Asper said his government is ready to help Bangladesh deal with the current flood situation or any future natural disaster.
